Hourly rate vs. project price: which is better for freelancers?

22 augustus 2026

The core trade-off

Hourly billing protects you when scope is unclear. Project pricing lets you earn more per hour when you are efficient. Neither is universally better — the right choice depends on the situation.

When hourly billing makes sense

Hourly billing is the safer choice when scope can change — consulting, advisory work, anything where the client drives the direction. It also works well for ongoing retainers. The downside: some clients watch the clock, and your earnings are capped by hours worked.

When project pricing is smarter

Fixed-price projects reward efficiency. If you have delivered the same type of project 20 times, you can finish faster than a less experienced freelancer — meaning a higher effective hourly rate even if the invoice looks the same. Define deliverables precisely in writing and add a clause that scope changes trigger a revised quote.

The hybrid approach

Quote a fixed project price, but calculate it from an hourly base. Estimate your hours, multiply by your rate, add 15–20% buffer, and present it as a project fee. For discovery phases charge hourly; for execution once scope is defined, switch to fixed. The FairyFee calculator helps you build the estimate and compare against market benchmarks.
